Nigel Grimmer - Plastic Life Exhibition

Sat, 18 Oct 2008 - Sun, 13 Dec 2009

Nigel Grimmer is an avid collector of toys, action figures, comic books, joke shop props and film stills. He uses these objects in his photographs to ‘play’ out the situations and scenarios we face in our everyday lives and relationships. He replaces the fictional worlds previously occupied by the characters, with personal narratives, often of abandonment, sorrow and alienation.

The exhibition will feature a selection of his pieces, including photographs from his best-known work, Roadkill Family Album. Each photograph features a close friend or member of Nigel’s family, lying apparently dead by the side of a road wearing the mask of an animal. Despite the close personal relationship with the photographer, the identity of the subjects is obscured to all but the artist.

Paul Evans and Chris Jones - Cells Exhibition

Sat, 20 Dec 2008 - Sat, 21 Feb 2009

This exhibition forms part of a series of collaborations between artist Paul Evans and writer Chris Jones entitled Cells. For each exhibition Paul will make a series of drawings based on both the meanings of the word 'cell', and images of cells from the human body. Chris will then create a haiku poem; a type of Japanese poetry, usually written in three lines, to accompany each image.

Cells are the living units of every living organism, each with their own structures and functions. The word 'cell' also refers to both places of retreat (removed from the world), and of enclosure and imprisonment.

As the project progresses, and the artist's show work together at different venues, both the images and poetry will mutate. The artists describe the work as 'a meditation on our inner nature as organisms'.
